The inaugural Business Well-Being Network Conference gets the thumbs-up

The first Business Well-Being Network conference was held at the Inmarsat Conference Centre in central London on October 2nd. We were delighted to welcome over 100 delegates from a wide range of organisations to the event to hear speakers such as Dame Carol Black, David Macleod, Cary Cooper, Nic Marks and Olympic Sports Coach, Kelvin Giles. There was also valuable input from AstraZeneca, BT, Mersey Care NHS Trust and GlaxoSmithKline.

As well as stimulating speakers, the day offered members of the network interactive sessions and lots of opportunities to share knowledge and experience. The feedback on the event was extremely positive, including an average overall rating of 4/5. Elaine Mason, Staff Care Manager at Kent County Council commented:

"It's great being with people who are like-minded in being open to explore and extend their thinking. People were generous with their knowledge and ideas...Very energising to participate in."

Of course there were learning points too and we are already thinking about how to make next year's conference bigger and better for members and delegates.

The conference was free for Business Well-Being Network members and only £249 for non-members - a price that reflects our ethos of making knowledge readily available to practitioners. The network is growing and there is sure to be high demand for conference places next year. If you are a not a member you can register your interest and ensure that you are among the first to hear about next year's line-up by emailing our Network Manager, Vikkie Buxton. Foresight Project for Mental Capital and
Well-Being delivers
its full report

Our Director, Professor Cary Cooper was involved as a lead scientist in the recent launch of the Foresight Project for Mental Capital and Well-Being which was delivered by the government's Chief Scientific Advisor Professor John Beddington.  This landmark report is based on the advice of more than 450 leading experts and provides recommendations for how investment in well-being can drive the success of the UK's population and economy. The report does not only focus on well-being at work, but goes beyond it to look more broadly at mental health in society, the education and upbringing of children and issues of poverty and mental health. Overall, it provides an insight into the threats and opportunities for improving the nation's mental health.

You can read Cary Cooper's comments and find a link to the BBC coverage which contains an interview with him on his blog at: http://carycooperblog.com/2008/10/31/foresight-reminds-us-to-invest-in-our-line-managers/

Well-Being at Work: The New View

The Business Well-Being Network conference also saw the launch of the Network's Annual Report - Well-Being at Work: The New View.

With a Foreword written by Professor Cary Cooper, the report is designed as a practical guide to help practitioners to take an integrated approach to managing well-being and employee engagement. It provides:

A review of the current UK well-being and engagement context, including Foresight and Dame Carol Black's review

Survey results that show the most troubling aspects of working life for UK employees

New research findings that reveal how to engage your workforce by improving specific aspects of well-being

A review of the latest UK and international research evidence for the link between well-being and the bottom-line

Practical tools to improve well-being and engagement in your organisation

The report was stimulated by and provided as a benefit for members of The Business Well-Being Network which now comprises more than 80 member organisations. But copies are also available to non-members from just £75 plus VAT.
